Of the three preserved neopythagorean treatises On Kingship, that of Diotogenes is probably theone that best allows an exploration of the problematic question of dating. The present historical commentaryfirst outlines Diotogenes’ definition of the “good king” and his qualities. It then gathers the main cluesconverging towards a dating at the end of the Hellenistic period or at the beginning of the Principate (1stcentury BCE-1st century CE). It does so by examining the echoes with the political language of the Hellenistickingship and by attempting to locate certain great political virtues in the evolution of monarchical ideology.

Des trois traités néopythagoriciens Sur la royauté conservés, celui de Diotogène est sans doute celuiqui permet le mieux d’explorer la question, combien problématique, de la datation. Ce commentaire historiques’attache tout d’abord à définir la figure du bon roi et ses qualités selon Diotogène. Il rassemble ensuite lesprincipaux indices convergeant vers une datation à la fin de la période hellénistique ou au début du Principat(ier siècle av. J.-C.-ier siècle ap.), en examinant les échos avec le langage politique de la royauté hellénistique eten cherchant à situer certaines grandes vertus politiques dans l’évolution de l’idéologie monarchique.
