The presentation in parallel of two Gbaya societies whose languages are part of the same linguistic fraction of the 'Northwest Gbaya', but which have had a very different recent history - since the beginning of the 19th century - is instructive as to the effects induced on the practice of the ordination and its status. These are the Gbaya Ɓodoe of the rural commmune of Bingué in CAR and the Gbaya Gaimona of bertoua in Cameroon. Our analysis shows in fact that the ordeal, which comes under the oath, is at the initiative of the accused among the Ɓodoe, while it becomes an instrument of the chief's justice among the Gaimona. As for the witch-doctor, called wàn-gbánà in ɓodoe as in Gaimona, who is a reference for the fight against witch-doctors, he has only a fragile and ephemeral status among the Ɓodoe while he has become the unavoidable auxiliary of the chief among the Gaimona.

La présentation en parallèle de deux sociétés gbaya dont les parlers font partie de la même fraction linguistique du ‘Northwest Gbaya’, mais qui ont eu une histoire récente – depuis le début du XIXème siècle – bien différente est instructive quant aux effets induits sur la pratique de l’ordalie et de son statut. Il s'agit des Gbaya Ɓodoe de la commmune rurale de Bingué en RCA et des Gbaya Gaimona de bertoua au Cameroun. Notre analyse montre en effet que l’ordalie, qui relève du serment, est à l’initiative de l’accusé(e) chez les Ɓodoe, tandis qu’elle devient un instrument de la justice du chef chez les Gaimona. Quant au sorcier-devin, appelé wàn-gbánà en ɓodoe comme en gaimona, qui est une référence pour la lutte contre les sorciers, il n’a qu’un statut fragile et éphémère chez les Ɓodoe tandis qu’il est devenu l’auxiliaire incontournable du chef chez les Gaimona.
