Official painter of the Navy and founder of the French artists colonial Society, Louis-Jules Dumoulin has travelled the world and collected a lot of photographs. In 1888-89, then in 1897, he carried out two official missions in Asia leading him to visit China and to bring back a collection of almost three hundred photographs taken or bought mainly in Shanghai. The main goal of this article is to present his collection and try to reconstitute the journeys of Dumoulin and the origin of his photographs.

Peintre officiel de la Marine et fondateur de la Société coloniale des artistes français, Louis-Jules Dumoulin a parcouru le monde et collecté de nombreuses photographies. En 1888-89, puis en 1897, il effectue deux missions officielles en Asie qui le conduiront à séjourner en Chine d'où il ramènera une collection de presque 300 clichés prises ou achetés sur place principalement à Shanghai. Cet article vise à présenter sa collection et tente de reconstituer le parcours de Dumoulin et l'origine de ses photographies.
