Le frère augustin Gentile da Foligno figure parmi les principaux correspondants d’Angelo Clareno. À la suite de sa nomination en tant que socius du prieur général augustin Guillaume de Crémone, Clareno lui envoie une missive concernant un autre frère augustin, Simone Fidati da Cascia. Celui-ci traverse une crise spirituelle et souhaite abandonner sa mission de prédication pour s’isoler dans un ermitage. Dès lors, Angelo Clareno, Gentile da Foligno, Guillaume de Crémone, Barthélémy l’abbé de Subiaco et l’augustin Giovanni da Salerno se mobilisent pour l’empêcher d’accomplir son dessein. Le cas de Simone Fidati suscite ainsi une convergence d’intérêt inattendue entre un dissident franciscain, un prieur général augustin et un abbé bénédictin.

The Augustinian friar Gentile da Foligno is among Angelo Clareno’s principal correspondents. After Gentile’s nomination as socius for the Augustinian prior general William of Cremona, Clareno sent him a letter regarding the case of another Augustinian friar, Simone Fidati da Cascia. The latter was going through a spiritual crisis and wanted to give up his preaching activity so he could isolate himself in a hermitage. Angelo Clareno, Gentile da Foligno, William of Cremona, Bartholomew the abbot of Subiaco, and the Augustinian friar Giovanni da Salerno thus joined forces to prevent Simone from fulfilling his intention. This case generated an unexpected confluence of interests between a Franciscan dissident, an Augustinian prior general, and a Benedictine abbot.
