Résumé 0

In May 1998, France made a powerful gesture in relation to its colonial past in New Caledonia when it recognized the “ fait colonial” and the necessity of engaging in a process of decolonization. France recognizes the sovereignty of the Kanak people, which, however, is shared with the other communities of New Caledonia. France is ready to grant sovereignty to New Caledonia. The conflicts over independence seem to have been resolved by the political pact signed in Nouméa, the capital of New Caledonia, between the French State, the FLNKS (Front de libération nationale kanak socialiste) and the RPCR (Rassemblement pour la Nouvelle-Calédonie dans la République française). This paper analyzes this political negotiation.
