How can we characterise the dynamics of rural development in France, and how do these changes raise issues for the training of future rural development officers? We suppose that the rural development professions are experiencing continuities, in the sense of a stability of their missions, as well as profound evolutions, with the inclusion of rural development in the globalising paradigm of transition. A European Erasmus+ Capacity Building project, running from 2019 to 2022, has prompted reflection on this topic and work continued until 2024. A review of the literature on the dynamics and policies of rural development, as well as on the evolution of rural development professions in France, allows us to establish the framework of the study. We therefore analyse the internship offers transmitted to our master’s degree in Territorial Management and Local Development over the last five academic years, i.e. a corpus of 365 offers. The analysis shows that public policies on rural development are being reformulated in relation to sustainability issues. This brings new training challenges and, at the same time, it appears that the transition paradigm is not so much a break but rather an extension of a rural development paradigm from which it takes up many of the fundamentals.
