Audrey Bauguil et al., « Causes of medication administration errors in older adults: A systematic review », Gériatrie et Psychologie Neuropsychiatrie du Vieillissement, ID : 10670/1.4b7f2a...
Older adults are particularly vulnerable to medication administration errors (MAE). To prevent these errors, it is crucial to identify and understand their causes. A literature review was conducted using the PRISMA method. A total of 2,798 articles were initially identified, of which 15 were included in the review. The causes identified were divided into 4 categories: patient-related; direct drug-related; health professional-related; and organizational, team-working, or environment-related. A large number of different causes were identified (n = 56). These were mostly patient-related, resulting from physical and cognitive impairment. Little empirical research has been conducted in relation to causes in this specific area. Most of the studies were conducted in a healthcare facility or institution. This study cannot therefore provide a comprehensive review of all the risk factors for MAE, especially among older adults who are able to self-administer their medication independently in a non-healthcare setting. To study this topic, a further literature review on the causes of non-adherence to medication in older adults is necessary.
