The resumption of those oedipal object-relations whose renunciation the infantile ego seeks to avoid—this is what constitutes the stuff of transference. The reactualization of these relations drives the analysand’s speech, which follows the “psychic movements” of object-representations impelled by transference (displacement, projections, substitutions, and concatenations); interpretation comes together with, doubles, and completes this work of speech, leading to the final exfiltration of the primary object into the real world; it will force this object to be represented in the real world, but only by a substitute relieved of its passional oedipal charge.
