How the center/periphery relations in the Ethiopian political space has been understood in Ethiopian studies can only be explained in a historical perspective taking into consideration the representations transmitted by European and Arab travellers, as well as Ethiopian Muslim or Christian writings since the Middle Ages (Derat 2003: 31-49).
