The publication in 1979 of "The postmodern condition. Report on knowledge" by Jean-François Lyotard opened the way for a multitude of variations on the theme of modernity, its metamorphoses, its crises, its deaths and its resurrections. Despite or because of this overabundance of comments, the contribution of the modernity paradigm to understanding the contemporary world is less and less clear. The concept of modernization which is closely linked to it adds to the confusion, because it generally focuses on the transformation of the operating modes of social or political practices, without questioning the aims. After refuting the critics of modernity who, positioning themselves in relation to it, remain trapped in it, this text strives to highlight the exhaustion of this paradigm and its inability to account for the contemporary world. Ultimately, it is a question of analyzing the way in which the contemporary world is structured around a new articulation of the individual and the collective, in particular in a transformed relationship to institutions and territories. This re-articulation is irreducible to the conceptual frameworks of modernity.

La publication en 1979 de La condition postmoderne. Rapport sur le savoir de Jean-François Lyotard a ouvert la voie à une multitude de variations sur le thème de la modernité, de ses métamorphoses, de ses crises, de ses morts et de ses résurrections. Malgré – ou à cause – de cette surabondance de commentaires, la contribution du paradigme de la modernité à la compré­hension du monde contemporain est de moins en moins nette. Le concept de modernisation qui lui est étroitement lié ajoute à la confusion, car il s'attache généralement à la transformation des modes opératoires des pratiques sociales ou politiques, sans en questionner les finalités. Après avoir réfuté les critiques de la modernité qui, se positionnant par rapport à elle, en restent prisonnières, ce texte s'efforce de mettre en évidence l'épuisement de ce paradigme et son incapacité à rendre compte du monde contemporain. In fine, il s'agit d'analyser la façon dont le monde contemporain se structure autour d'une nouvelle articulation de l'individuel et du collectif, notamment dans un rapport transformé aux institutions et aux territoires. Cette ré-articulation est irréductible aux cadres conceptuels de la modernité.
