Résumé En

In this article, the point studied is the nature of “vulgarity” in literature, and how Latin inscriptions and literary texts deal with it. Two manifestations of vulgarity are considered: 1. Vulgarity as expressing triteness of language and of mode of life, but also a lack of culture and good manners; 2. Vulgarity as aggressively defying the conventional proprieties and tackling taboo subjects.
