Jewish epigraphy and soteriology in medieval Provence. Jewish writings on the hereafter were diverse. They expressed believes and not a doctrine at the exception of the resurrection dogma. Nonetheless, they gave a good definition of retributions in the hereafter at their very own place : Hell, Gehenna and the Garden of Eden described by a ritual of the XII-XIIIth centuries. The Gehenna was a place of purgation for the average sinner. Funeral epigraphy gave no further evidence on Hell nor on Gehenna , but made the «Gan Eden» more or less explicit. Epigraphy recalled the future world which would come after the resurrection of the Dead.

Les écrits juifs concernant l’au-delà se révèlent divers, car ils expriment des croyances et non une doctrine. Seule la résurrection constitue un dogme. Il existe, cependant, une définition des rétributions dans l’au-delà et des lieux propres à chacune de celles-ci : l’Enfer, la Géhenne et le Jardin d’Eden. Un rituel des XIIe-XIIIe siècles décrit ce dernier. La Géhenne est un lieu de purgation pour les pécheurs moyens. L’épigraphie funéraire ne dit rien de l’Enfer ni de la Géhenne, mais elle rend le Gan Eden présent, de manière plus ou moins explicite. Elle évoque aussi le monde futur qui surviendra après la résurrection des morts.
