This paper is developing some considerations about emerging and transformations of environmentalism, here conceived as an grand narrative about late modernity. It supports the idea that it is an original narrative, appeared during the late sixties in the West, and carrying a social and political global project, largely independent of physical environment damages and the complaints it arouses. Furthermore, the paper studies the different ways by which environmentalism is spreading in civil society, and how it has been appropriated at different degrees, either by committed ecologists, or by sympathizers, or by minimalist environmentalists. The contribution concludes by some prospects about the future of this grand narrative.

Cet article propose une réflexion sur l’émergence et les transformations de l’écologisme, considéré ici comme un grand récit de la modernité tardive. Il défend l’idée qu’il s’agit là d’un grand récit original, surgi à la fin des années soixante en Occident qui contient un projet social et politique global, mais est largement indépendant des dégradations de l’environnement physique, et des doléances suscitées par elles. L’article examine ensuite comment ce récit se diffuse dans la société civile et est approprié à différents degrés par celle-ci, soit par des écologistes engagés, soit des sympathisants ou encore des environnementalistes minimalistes. Il se termine enfin par les perspectives sur le devenir de ce grand récit.
