Cet article traite de la conception esthétique de la langue chez Edward Sapir et de ses sources possibles. Cette conception est particulièrement visible dans l’usage que fait Sapir de la notion de sentiment de la forme, notion qui apparaît de façon répétée dans Language et dans d’autres textes. Cette notion, comme Sapir nous l’apprend, a pour origine la théorie de l’art. La première partie de l’article place le sentiment de la forme dans son contexte théorique, c’est-à-dire les notions de forme et de configuration (pattern), et leur rapport aux facteurs fonctionnels et à l’évolution du langage. La seconde partie aborde les origines possibles de la notion de sentiment de la forme. L’hypothèse défendue est qu’il faut chercher ces origines dans l’esthétique de langue allemande, plus précisément dans la notion de Formgefühl, développée dans le cadre d’une esthétique psychologique qui mettait particulièrement en exergue le concept d’empathie. Ce courant fut illustré notamment par R. Vischer, Wölfflin, Lipps et Dessoir. Toutefois, l’interprétation par Sapir du Formgefühl lui est propre, et témoigne d’une réorientation «intellectualiste » du concept.
