The article offers an overview of the pages devoted by Montaigne, in his Essays, to pain of somatic origin and to his critical dialogue with the philosophical traditions of Antiquity. Against the stoic defenses which aim at containing the traumatic impact of pain by the control of representations, i.e. dissociation and repression, Montaigne puts forward a different strategy which does not aim at denying suffering, but aims, on the contrary, by “gentle persuasion”, at its subjective appropriation.
