Interventi imperiali nell’attività edile a Ostia tra Valentiniano I e Onorio

Nella seconda metà del IV sec. d.C. si registra a Ostia una consistente ripresa dell’attività edilizia, favorita specialmente da Valentiniano I e Valente, che si avvalgono per la realizzazione pratica dell’opera del prefetto dell’annona e, nei casi più importanti, di quello urbano. Questi lavori interessano tutte le aree della città. Sono state riesaminate alcune iscrizioni relative a rifacimenti di costruzioni che possono contribuire all’approfondimento di questo periodo, forse l’ultimo, di diffuso fervore edilizio.

In the second half of the 4th century A.D. there was a consistent revival of building activity in Ostia, favoured especially by Valentinian I and Valens, who availed themselves of the work of the prefect of the annona and, in the most important cases, of the urban prefect. This work involved all areas of the city. A number of inscriptions relating to building reconstructions have been re-examined, which may contribute to a deeper understanding of this period, perhaps the last, of widespread building fervour.
