Résumé 0

This article examines the legends and myths surrounding the figure of Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā, 980-1037) in the Western world. Some of these narratives arose in the medieval period, and they evolved, after a pause, at the beginning of the early modern times, to take another form in the nineteenth century. It is shown that the current myth around the scholar combines two powerful trends that account for its popularity : the persistence of orientalist stereotypes and a naive notion about science and the conditions of its production.
