Catechetical leaders of every age have had the task of conveying Gospel teachings and fostering faith practices in light of changing social, political, and cultural forces. The worldview shaped by cultural postmodernity places new demands on the church and has new expectations as to how we sustain and nurture the faith of all believers. It is in this context that we can examine and evaluate various approaches to catechesis. The proposal here is situate the work of catechesis at the intersection of the call for adult faith formation and the imperative that we be and become an evangelizing church. These come together in various models of “total community catechesis”, which is rooted in the life of the parish, multi-generational, and oriented toward evangelization.A resource that can provide insight as we imagine, plan, implement, and evaluate total community catechesis is the concept of “learning communities.” Drawing on the work of those writing in business about “learning organizations,” this concept gives us a way of thinking about catechesis that goes beyond formal sessions or classes and recognizes the formative role of the very life of the parish.
