Developing Literacy Skills in Relation to Healthcare: A Case of Professional Development

Résumé 0

In the context of a healthcare partnership, many adults are not able to process and use information related to their health due to a low level of literacy. Hence, in these settings, practitioners seek to develop their own understanding of the phenomenon and their ways of promoting autonomy in these adults. However, there is little empirical evidence for the development of such skills in the workplace. Based on 30 semi-structured interviews, a description of how learning takes place when practice is based on the participation of patients with limited literacy will be discussed. Approaches that support professional development through learning within work teams that are open to a “patient perspective” will prove to be favorable to the co-construction of the knowledge needed for a pro-literacy practice.
