Co-operatives in Germany in the 20th Century : An Overview and Some Hypotheses

Cet article présente une vue d’ensemble du développement des coopératives en Allemagne au XXe siècle. Alors que les coopératives font aujourd’hui partie du « secteur non lucratif » dans ce pays, elles peuvent être considérées comme des « précurseurs » de ce secteur. Cet article se concentre en particulier sur le secteur des coopératives de consommation et du logement. Il montre l’évolution du secteur et sa capacité d’adaptation aux conditions économiques et politiques. L’article s’interroge enfin sur les forces qui ont permis cette longévité, en particulier la structure organisationnelle ou la motivation des employés.

This article gives an overview of the development of modern co-operatives in Germany during the twentieth century. As part of what is now called the “non-profit-sector”, the co-operative could be interpreted as a precursor of the “non-profit” business, although not all co-operatives can be subsumed under the “non-profit sector”. The article focuses on the emergence of the cooperative movement in late nineteenth-century Germany, particularly in retailing and housing. It demonstrates the evolution of this sector and its ability to adapt to economic and political conditions after the Second World War. Finally the article deals with the forces – organizational structure and employee motivation – which have permitted the survival of cooperatives even in times of economic crisis.
