Matthieu Rey et al., « Still researching. Syria as an object of study (1980s to 2010s) », Mondes arabes, ID : 10670/1.588dcf...
Syrian studies has a long history and has developed in fits and starts. In particular, since the 1980s, it has oscillated between calls for understanding and interruptions, largely due to the constraints imposed by the regime. Based on fieldwork of Syria, of the research community, and on a quantitative exploration of works published on the country, we analyze what we call “still researching.” If the revolutionary moment of 2011 did not directly constitute a rupture for Syrian studies, scholars saw their research conditions change immediately, while being called upon to explain the upheaval. After the shock, research themes and maps have evolved according to the opportunities or closures caused by the conflict.
