Résumé 0

France instant defeat against Germany (May-June 1940) can be accounted for by the military conceptions that had structured its defence policy prior to the operations. Thus, the defeat represents a pertinent historic and empirical field to highlight the role of ideology in defence policies. This article first characterises the French representations (minutely codified by the military power) that shaped military strategies in the 1940s. It highlights the origins of such strategies, and analyses the underlying normative principles that legitimated them. Finally, it focuses on strategic effects, i.e. how ideologies actively operated on the course and outcome of the conflict.
