If light is to shine and to draw the objects and beings it illuminates out of the realm of darkness, it must cross a translucent body which filters and reshapes man’s access to the real world, to others and to God. The aesthetics of stained-glass windows, as well as the numerous casements and windows around which the narrative of the medieval novel is structured are perfect examples of this. Does transparency, however, stand for a relational Utopia in those narratives ? Or conversely, does it point to the fact that in playing the game of invisibility, it is bound to introduce an asymmetrical relationship from which the spectre of an omnipresent, all-seeing power emerges ? In other words, is total transparency the antithesis of secrecy (its reverse or its opposite) or is it instead its double, all the more threatening for being veiled ?
Pour se diffuser et tirer des ténèbres les objets et les êtres qu’elle illumine, la lumière doit traverser un corps translucide qui filtre et reconfigure l’accès de l’homme au réel, à autrui et à Dieu, comme en témoigne exemplairement l’esthétique du vitrail, ainsi que les innombrables fenêtres et verrières qui forment l’architecture narrative du roman médiéval. Dans ces récits, la transparence traduit-elle néanmoins une utopie relationnelle ou dénonce-t-elle, au contraire, qu’en cédant à la tentation de l’invisible, elle introduit inévitablement une asymétrie d’où émerge le spectre d’un pouvoir omniprésent et omniregardant ? En d’autres termes, la transparence totale est-elle l’antithèse (envers ou revers) du secret ou se présente-elle plutôt comme un double d’autant plus menaçant qu’il apparaît voilé ?
Para se difundir e tirar das trevas os objectos e os seres que ilumina, a luz necessita obrigatoriamente de percorrer um corpo translúcido que filtra e reconfigura incessantemente o acesso do homem ao real, ao outro e a Deus, numa lógica que se reflecte tanto na estética do vitral como nas inúmeras janelas e vidraças que formam a diáfana arquitectura narrativa do romance medieval. Contudo, nesses poemas, reflectirá a transparência apenas uma utopia relacional, ou virá, pelo contrário, denunciar que, ao sucumbir facilmente à tentação/sedução da invisibilidade, introduz inevitavelmente um desequilíbrio donde irrompe o terrífico espectro do olhar omnipresente e totalizador ? Por outras palavras, será a transparência a antítese do segredo ou antes o seu duplo, um duplo tanto mais ameaçador quanto dissimulado sob o véu cristalino da revelação.
