As new fashions and ideas flowed into eighteenth-century France from abroad, notably from England, age-old political and social distinctions in absolutist societies were suddenly challenged, as was an equestrian culture bound to this system. This raised all kinds of thorny questions for enlightened members of the intellectual elite, notably the Encyclopédistes. Traditional equestrian exercises and displays had to compete with emerging forms that would soon become canonical as well: regulated horse races and the circus.
