Résumé En

Scientific collections, enriched over the centuries, are an essential source of knowledge about biodiversity. France's collections, which contain about 100 million specimens, nearly 6% of the world total, serve as both traditional references and vast repositories of observations. The diversity and sheer size of these collections, coupled with their long history, pose significant challenges for access. However, in an open science framework, natural history collections should be made available to the widest possible audience. Digitization initiatives - such as those led by the European infrastructure DiSSCo and its French node Récolnat - to produce, mobilize, aggregate, harmonize and provide access to natural history collections and their data are revolutionizing access to natural history collections. Building on this momentum, the e-COL+ project is driving the digitization of fossil and extant metazoans to create an open-access library of 3D data (cross sections and models) representative of the diversity of French natural history collections. Supported by the French National Research Agency (ANR-21-ESRE-0053), this 8-year project is led by the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in collaboration with 9 French institutions. e-COL+ is establishing workflows for mass digitization using state-of-the-art digitization and post-processing techniques (X-ray micro-tomography, surface scanning and photogrammetry, artificial intelligence) while ensuring the FAIRness of the data. The e-COL+ project aims to promote access to natural history data, an irreplaceable heritage and an indispensable resource for current and future scientific research.
