Résumé En

This paper offers a study of medieval written solutions for visual creation and some answers about the generation of meaning in medieval sculpture. The inscriptions are one of the most frequent solutions used by works of art to exist, mean and act. The semiotic nearness between alphabetical and iconic signs makes writing a special way for sculpture to make sense. In the framework of the difficult equation between creation and devotion, this paper studies two inscriptions carved in the phylactery hold by two angels in the western façade of Santa María la Real Church in Aguilar de Campoo. Traditionnaly studied for their liturgical or poetic origins, these texts actually give more information about how medieval Art has thought the capacity of sculptured images to mean; for that motive, this paper proposes a new reading of these inscriptions and put them in perspective with similar productions.
