The fourth century B.C. in Rome was witness to the disappearance of the ager gentilicius and its replacement by the ager publicus, Systems of land ownership whose respective identities were unclear not only to the Modems, but to the Ancients as well. The roman victory over the Veii effectively annulated the agnatical link in the assignations by the ager publicus, while Ucinia Sextia legislation created the same kind of relationship for the possessio. Thus it came about that the individualist mode of land occupation replaced the collectivist mode, thereby favoring the takeover of the ager publicus.
