L’identification à l’agresseur a fait l’objet d’élaborations très différentes, d’abord par Ferenczi en 1932 et ensuite par Anna Freud en 1936. Celle de Ferenczi relève d’une forme pathologique et gravement toxique, correspondant à une attaque de l’identité du sujet à la suite d’un traumatisme majeur. Anna Freud décrit quant à elle un processus de défense servant à maîtriser les angoisses face à des objets extérieurs perçus comme menaçants. Ce processus est transitoire et finalement structurant. Qu’une identification puisse être aliénante ou structurante dépendrait donc en première approximation de la nature de l’agression, de la place symbolique et affective qu’occupe l’agresseur auprès de l’enfant, et du degré de maturité psychique auquel celui-ci a pu parvenir. Des illustrations dans différents domaines viendront éclairer ces notions.

Identifying with one’s aggressor was the subject of two very distinct postulates, a first one by Ferenczi in 1932 and another by Anna Freud in 1936. Ferenczi describes a pathological and seriously toxic form corresponding to an attack on the subject’s identity after a major trauma. On the other hand, Anna Freud describes a defence process seeking to control anxiety in the face of external objects perceived as threatening. This process is transitory and turns out to bring about structure. Whether the identification turns out to be alienating or structuring could therefore depend - in a first approximation - on the nature of the aggression, on the aggressor’s symbolic and affective place in the child’s life, and the degree of psychological maturity that the child has reached. Illustrations in various fields will shed light on these notions.
