Ce texte propose de développer l’hypothèse suivante : la crise de 1929 a été l’occasion d’une reconfiguration complète du capitalisme, laquelle a permis, à terme, l’invention d’un nouveau modèle communément appelé « société de consommation ». Nous sommes alors passés d’un capitalisme essentiellement de production à un capitalisme faisant la part belle à la consommation, d’un capitalisme répressif à un capitalisme libidinal. Dans cette perspective, la crise commencée en 2008 correspond à une mise en crise de ce modèle consommatoire. Voire à une fin de cycle.

Capitalism’ Libidinal TurnThis article argues that the economic crisis of 1929 was the occasion for a complete reconfiguration of capitalism which resulted in the invention of a new model commonly referred to as ‘consumer society’. This shift saw the transition from a production-based to a consumption-based capitalism, and can be understood as leading from a repressive to a libidinal type of capitalism. In this perspective, the crisis that began in 2008 is that of the consumer model of capitalism and signals perhaps the end of a cycle.
