L’étude d’une tour maîtresse médiévale à Pouzauges (Vendée), réalisée en 2017-2018 avant un projet de restauration, s’est appuyé sur une démarche parallèle d’archéologie du bâti et d’étude des sources écrites préconisée par le cahier des charges scientifiques. Les deux parties de l’étude, menées conjointement, ont abouti à des résultats complémentaires s’enrichissant mutuellement. L’étude archéologique du bâti a permis de distinguer deux phases principales de construction, caractérisées par des aménagements conséquents. La première a été datée du début du XIe siècle par l’étude architecturale et la datation radiocarbone de charbons préservés dans les mortiers. La seconde phase de construction, beaucoup plus tardive, est datée du milieu du XVe siècle par l’étude dendrochronologique de bois architecturaux et se caractérise par des aménagements domestiques de confort et le réaménagement des parties sommitales. L’étude d’archives a permis d’apporter des éléments de contexte historique importants à l’érection primitive de la tour, en la replaçant dans le réseau castral des vicomtes de Thouars, puissance régionale en expansion. La prise en compte d’archives inédites a également permis de prendre du recul par rapport à l’historiographie antérieure de la tour, qui faisait de Gilles de Rais le commanditaire de son réaménagement au XVe siècle ; il s’agirait plutôt d’un programme attribuable aux seigneurs de Vendôme, vidames de Chartres, grands bâtisseurs d’œuvres castrales dans l’ouest du royaume de France au XVe siècle. Archéologie du bâti et étude des sources écrites se répondent dans un dialogue enrichissant l’histoire du monument, donnant à voir l’intérêt de systématiser ces deux approches dans les études préalables de monuments historiques.
