La bataille de Pharsale, qui scella la défaite de Pompée face à César en 48 av. J.-C., a fait l’ objet d’une tradition textuelle importante, et ce depuis le récit qu’en fit le général vainqueur lui-même dans la Guerre civile. Depuis l’Antiquité jusqu’à la Renaissance, la vérité n’a manifestement pas constitué une préoccupation majeure pour les auteurs qui évoquèrent la bataille thessalienne. De fait, au XVIe siècle, le récit représentait pour les auteurs italiens d’ouvrages militaires une sorte de matière première qu’il s’agissait d’exploiter afin d’atteindre un certain nombre d’objectifs, à travers la mise en oeuvre de stratégies textuelles et rhétoriques précises. Utilisée comme un répertoire d’éléments topiques, Pharsale était une bataille particulièrement emblématique. Les modalités de l’exploitation du récit et des connaissances héritées de l’Antiquité montrent les capacités d’écriture d’auteurs d’ouvrages militaires tels que l’Arte militare terrestre e maritima de Mario Savorgnano, et prouvent combien la distinction entre textes de nature utilitaire et littéraire était floue dans la culture renaissante.
