"The rational use of medicines (URM) is considered one of the key elements recommend - ed by the World Health Organization (WHO) for pharmaceutical policies. The excessive increase in the use of medicines in many countries has been identified as a major barrier to the achievement of URM and is part of a phenomenon called the ‘pharmaceuticalization’ of the society. This paper aims to present innitiatives to rationalize the use of methylphenidate and its limits in Brazil, con - sidering the concept of pharmaceuticalization of the society. It is an exploratory study, based on a narrative review of the scientific literature. Controversies about the uses of methylphenidate make it a good example of this phenomenon and may help in the reflection and construction of new paths to the limits found by the concept of rational use of medicines."
