Les documents rapportant l’observation de techniques d’émaillage par des voyageurs ou marchands européens à Canton ne sont pas légion. Une lettre souvent citée, celle d’un certain Imbert en 1751, témoigne d’une attention portée par quelques visiteurs du port du Guangdong à la fabrique des émaux chinois. Ce document cependant est mal connu et entouré de zones d’ombres. En recoupant le témoignage d’Imbert avec le journal tenu par Pierre Poivre, ancien missionnaire devenu agent de compagnie, l’article propose d’enquêter sur les conditions d’observation des procédés chinois à Canton au milieu du xviiie siècle. Nous mettons ainsi en évidence la façon dont Canton a pu constituer un lieu de collecte d’informations techniques au xviiie siècle en dépit de conditions restrictives d’échange avec les fabricants chinois. Nous montrons ainsi que Canton fut un pôle d’interaction et de formalisation de savoirs techniques, parallèlement à la voie missionnaire souvent privilégiée par l’historiographie.
