Résumé De

A quick look at the modern media landscape leaves little room for doubt that literary works circulate not only as entire texts, but also as fragments that develop an independent life of their own. Enjoying particularly widespread circulation are literary characters that take on an autonomous existence in serial novels, radio plays, fan fiction, television series, the visual arts, music, and material culture. This proliferation suggests that such characters possess cultural capital in the Bourdieuan sense which makes their (re)use rewarding or profitable. But what exactly does this mean in today’s literary and media system? This article attempts to define the underlying forms of value pertaining to literary characters, and seeks to show how valuation practices, dissemination, and circulation are interrelated. Drawing on a variety of methodological approaches, the authors examine canonical value, value as an extra-literary or lifeworld impact, and circulation as a value in and of itself.
