Agency in one’s relationships It would be erroneous to think that the major claim made by the capability approach would be that well-being is to be extended beyond mere revenue or consumption, towards indicators of human development. If the Millennium Development Goals only reflect states of well-being irrespective of the way in which those states have been realized, the capability approach nevertheless allows us at least to think about well-being and agency as the two complementary faces of the same medal. In a second phase, we deepen Amartya Sen’s argument by criticizing his presentation of agency in individual terms only. We sketch the contours of an alternative notion of agency as a profoundly relational concept.
