192-182 BC: some reflections on ten years of Spartan history. It is generally agreed that Sparta became a member of the Achaean League in 192 BC. A reexamination of the sources can lead to another hypothesis : that of a simple alliance from 192 to 182, whose collapse led to the forced integration of Sparta in the League in 188. Many Spartans were antagonized by the harshness with which Philopoemen submitted them to the Achaean rule, and they appealed to Rome on multiple occasions. The situation of the city then dominated the relations between Romans and Achaeans until 182, when a compromise led to the admission of Sparta into the League, but with derogatory status.

On situe généralement l’adhésion de Sparte à la confédération achéenne en 192 avant J.-C. Un réexamen des sources peut conduire à une autre hypothèse : celle d’une simple alliance de 192 à 189, dont la rupture conduisit à l’intégration forcée de Sparte dans la confédération en 188. La plupart des Spartiates n’admettant pas la rudesse avec laquelle Philopoemen les soumettait au système achéen, les appels à Rome se multiplièrent. La situation de la cité fut alors au coeur des relations entre Romains et Achéens jusqu’en 182, date à laquelle un compromis aboutit à l’adhésion de Sparte à la confédération avec un régime dérogatoire.
