Where do the dead go ? This question haunts all those who have lost loved ones, but the absence of a definitive answer weighs particularly heavily on those who are dealing not just with the pain of a death but also with the disappearance of the body and erasure of all traces of the deceased. Drawing on the works of Stéphanie Solinas, W.G. Sebald and Rithy Panh, this article explores the ways in which the dead exercise an influence on culture, embedded in the earth of the paddy fields and the dust of the towns and cities, hidden away in the archives and in sorrow, elusive but nevertheless tangible.

Cette question hante les endeuillés, mais l’impossibilité d’y répondre pèse particulièrement sur ceux qui doivent ajouter à la douleur de la perte la disparition du corps et l’effacement des traces. Cheminant avec les œuvres de Stéphanie Solinas, W.G.
