This article reflects on international migratory movements in Latin America by exploring the challengesconfronting its multilateral governance in the context of the contradictions brought about by globalization.The article presents the evolution of these migratory movements in order to show that they are part of thehistory of nations rather than an "invention" of globalization, emphasizing the tensions between the exerciseof sovereignty and, on one hand, market forces and, on the other, the forces of humanitarianism. The articleconcludes by suggesting the opportunities and challenges that migration may pose for the internationalsystem and the possibilities for its governance in the immediate future.
