A significant part of so-called anarchist anthropology attempts to find examples in human history of “libertarian societies”, living in relative communal harmony combining collective independence, individual autonomy, socio-economic equality and collective solidarity. Yet there is a “de Clastres paradox”: the apparently consensual unity of the group and the equal freedom of each member at the political level are articulated against a double constitutive asymmetry at the cultural level: on the one hand, within society in terms of prestige, talent, influence or gender; on the other, in relation to an ancestral Law, presented as eternal and indefectible, acting as a heteronomous normativity. A clear lesson can be drawn from this tangled double hierarchy: no human society, even the most egalitarian, can exist in the absence of a founding Third, which acts as cultural legitimization and socio-political orientation.

Une partie importante de l’anthropologie dite anarchiste tente de trouver dans l’histoire humaine des exemples de « société libertaire », vivant une relative harmonie communautaire associant indépendance collective, autonomie individuelle, égalité socio-économique et solidarité collective. Il existe pourtant un « paradoxe de Clastres » : l’unité apparemment consensuelle du groupe et l’égale liberté de chacun des membres au plan politique s’articulent à une double asymétrie constitutive au plan culturel : d’une part, à l’intérieur de la société en termes de prestige, de talent, d’influence ou de genre ; d’autre part, en rapport à une Loi ancestrale, présentée comme éternelle et indéfectible, agissant au titre de normativité hétéronome. De cette double hiérarchie enchevêtrée, il convient de tirer un enseignement clair : aucune société humaine, y compris la plus égalitaire, ne saurait exister en l’absence d’un Tiers fondateur, qui agit à titre de légitimation culturelle et d’orientation socio-politique.
