"SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE STUDY OF MOCHE CEREMONIAL POTTERY SLIPS. A study of 22 sherds selected from distinct vessels painted with red and white slips has been conducted with a scanning electron microscope. The major research goal was to determine the chemical composition of ceremonial vessels found close to the tomb Nº 5 on Huaca de la Luna, one of the two most important monumental buildings at the Moche Site on the North Coast of Peru. The results confirm the use of iron oxides, probably hematite, to produce the red slip and calcite for the white slip. The possibilities and limits of the method are also discussed."
