Andrés Torres Carceller, « CLASSROOM WALLS AS A DIDACTIC DEVICE: Image and Aesthetics as Transformative Elements », HAL SHS (Sciences de l’Homme et de la Société), ID : 10670/1.6a58bb...
This chapter explores how classroom walls can serve as a highly impactful didactic resource. Drawing on the premise that images constitute a primary source of knowledge from early childhood, it examines the ways in which visual culture shapes both the perception and the construction of the school environment. The text underscores the importance of deliberately designing aesthetically attentive spaces, recognizing that visual elements activate cognitive and affective processes that foster meaningful learning.Through various research approaches—from analyzing students’ “visual voices” to categorizing different uses of classroom walls—the chapter highlights the multiple ways in which images can influence daily classroom dynamics. It also points to the consequences of insufficient pedagogical planning, which curtails the potential of classroom walls as tools for visual literacy, creativity, and critical participation. Consequently, an aesthetic and functional conception of these walls is proposed, inviting students to participate in the selection and arrangement of images. By doing so, walls become a dialogical and transformative space, contributing to a richer and more conscious educational experience.
