With the acquisition of Western Pomerania, Sweden received another university. Founded in 1456, the University of Greifswald had coped well with the challenges of the Reformation during the sixteenth century. The Thirty Years’ War dramatically worsened the university’s (economic) situation. The difficult financial situation also had a negative impact on the implementation of Queen Christina of Sweden’s reform plans for the university. The university, which took on important functions for the sovereign administration, also attracted Swedish students until the end of the 1660s, before Lund University, founded in 1666, overtook it.

L’acquisition par la Suède de la Poméranie occidentale apportait à la Couronne une nouvelle université. Fondée en 1456, l’université de Greifswald avait su faire face au défi de la Réformation au xvie siècle, mais la guerre de Trente Ans fit empirer la situation (économique) de l’institution dans des proportions dramatiques. La situation financière difficile fit aussi échouer les projets de réformes que la reine Christine de Suède avait pour Greifswald. L’université, qui jouait un rôle important dans l’administration du souverain, attirait aussi des Suédois jusqu’à la fin des années 1660, avant d’être détrônée par l’université de Lund, fondée en 1666.
