Résumé 0

The Black Hole in Holocaust HistoriographyFor many years Holocaust survivors in Romania have bemoaned the lack of attention given to their tragedy. It has been ignored by the publicat-large including academia, and condemned to a total absence even in memorial sites. The purpose of this article is to show that the tragedy of Romanian Jews was in fact one of the best kept secrets from the West and within the West itself. For decades the uniqueness of the Jewish tragedy in Romania was pushed aside, its reality retracted and horror blurred. Before examining the situation as it exists today, the following questions must be asked : what did we know on post-war Transnistria ; when exactly did we learn about the tragedy of the Romanian Jews ; which factors exercised an influence on the way this historical event was understood in comparison to the fate of other Jewish communities during the Holocaust ?
