Cet article trace une histoire intermédiale de la musique de fond au xxe siècle, en rapprochant l’expérience esthétique des spectateurs de l’économie de l’attention au quotidien. Des musiques d’accompagnement dans le cinéma muet aux sons d’ambiance dans le spectacle vivant contemporain, en passant par l’introduction croissante de muzaks dans les espaces publics ou commerciaux, le développement de la « mood » puis de la « background music », semble toujours avoir pour but de focaliser l’attention de l’auditeur sur autre chose que ce fond sonore, tout en conditionnant sa perception, en agissant subrepticement sur l’humeur et les émotions.
