Early Maladaptive Schemas among children: A new way to screen for depressed children?

How can children's schemas evolve into adult schemas that are responsible for depression? To answer this question, we translated Schmidt, Joiner, Young, and Telch's (1995) Early Maladaptive Schema Questionnaire into French and adapted it to children. We administered the questionnaire to two groups of children in years seven to ten (N = 252), one group containing children suffering from depression and the other containing children with no psychiatric disorders. The results provided insight into the structure of depression schemas. From a clinical perspective, we stress the possibility of using this tool to individually or collectively detect «normal» and «abnormal» schemas in children. Riassunto Gli schemi maladattivi precoci infantili: un nuovo screening per bambini depressi? Come possono gli schemi cognitivi infantili diventare schemi tipicamente depressivi in età adulta? Per rispondere a questa domanda abbiamo tradotto l'Early Maladaptive Schema Questionnaire in francese e lo abbiamo adattato ai giovani (Schmidt, Joiner, Young e Telch, 1995). Hanno risposto al questionario due gruppi di ragazzi e ragazze, di età compresa fra i 12 e i 15 anni (N = 252), uno con sintomi depressivi valutati con il Child Depression Inventory (CDI), l'altro senza disturbi. I risultati forniscono una migliore comprensione della struttura degli schemi depressivi. In una prospettiva clinica, sottolineiamo la possibilità di utilizzare questo strumento per identificare individualmente o collettivamente gli schemi maladattivi nei bambini.
