This essay examines the representation of the artist and the role of images in a contemporary American novel, The Book of Portraiture by Steve Tomasula (2006). First it dwells on the structure of the novel, its complex visual effects and its forms of iconic representation as it tells the history of portraiture from antiquity to postmodernity. Then it focuses on the second chapter of the book, centered on Diego Velazquez (chosen as narrator and focalizer) and his activity as a portraitist, and illustrated with sketches by Maria Tomasula based on Velazquez’s paintings. The last section explores the rich interpictorial network and the reflexivity of this work which, through the representation of the painter, also questions the function of the writer and the reader-viewer’s responsibility.

Cet article examine la représentation de l’artiste et la place de l’image dans un roman américain contemporain, The Book of Portraiture de Steve Tomasula (2006). Il analyse d’abord la structure du roman, ses effets visuels complexes et les modalités d’inscription de l’image qui scandent cette histoire du portrait, depuis les origines jusqu’à la postmodernité. Il s’attarde ensuite sur le deuxième chapitre du livre, centré sur l’activité de portraitiste du peintre Diego Velazquez (ici choisi comme narrateur et focalisateur) et émaillé de dessins réalisés d’après son œuvre par Maria Tomasula. Enfin il explore le riche réseau interpictural et la réflexivité du roman qui, à travers la représentation du peintre, interroge la fonction de l’écrivain et la responsabilité du lecteur-spectateur.
