This article emphasises the complexity of family and individual psychic issues at stake in different cultures. Varying notions as to the family and of kinship based on the taboo of incest between blood relations and symbolic incest serve as an introduction to these complex problems. Matters are further complicated by the child’s rank by age within the group, with gender differences having a distinct influence on sibling relations and individual psychic challenges.
