The present article looks into various occurrences of the French Renaissance poets' and Leopardi's addresses to "unmotherly Nature." Nature personified in the shape of a cruel mother does not fulfill the same expectations, whether articulated to an organic representation, or in tension with a mechanistic view of nature. Nonetheless, this personification outlines a conflicting filial bond with nature, a bond plagued by man's loss of a nurturing and caring mother Earth. The ephemeral nature of beauty, the destruction of empires, the volcanic eruptions, the soils' sterility, or the existential suffering: these are the charges made against unmotherly nature, and they all revolve around human awareness of its own finiteness. The apostrophe is sometimes included in a denaturation narrative looking for the sources of the punishment inflicted on men. Other times this accusatory apostrophe consists in a cry of revolt against an unjust suffering, yet it always arises to give meaning and shape to what evades logic and man's control.

Cet article examine les occurrences de l’adresse à « marâtre Nature » chez Du Bellay, Ronsard et Leopardi. La personnification de la nature en mauvaise mère ne répond pas aux mêmes attentes selon qu’elle s’articule à une représentation organique ou qu’elle entre en tension avec une conception mécaniste de la nature. Mais elle esquisse les contours d’un rapport filial conflictuel avec la nature, habité par la perte d’une mère nature, nourricière et attentive à l’homme. Caractère éphémère de la beauté, ruine des empires, éruptions volcaniques, stérilité des terres ou souffrance existentielle : les multiples chefs d’accusation contre la marâtre nature s’articulent autour de la conscience humaine de sa finitude. Qu’elle s’inscrive dans un récit de dénaturation qui cherche les causes de la peine infligée à l’homme ou qu’elle exprime un cri de révolte contre une souffrance injuste, l’apostrophe accusatrice à la nature comme marâtre surgit pour donner une forme et un sens à ce qui échappe à la raison et à la maîtrise de l’homme.
