Distinguée par Michel Foucault sous le nom de « fonction psy », la prégnance du discours psychologisant dans la cité est désormais d’une emprise telle en Occident qu’il apparaît presque naturel que le pouvoir, quel qu’il soit, s’adresse aux supposés détenteurs de ce discours lorsque vient au jour une question dite « de société ». On indique qu’à cet endroit le psychanalyste, lui en tout cas, ne peut que s’abstenir. Également qu’une telle abstention est interne à son exercice ; elle y prend ses racines dans un refus actif, quand il s’agit d’accueillir quelqu’un, d’user de quelque grille nosographique que ce soit, autrement dit de cataloguer.

Identified by Michel Foucault as the “psy-function”, the significance of the psychologizing discourse in the Western society has now become such that it seems almost natural that the power, whatever its form, should address itself to the supposed holders of this discourse, whenever a so-called “social” question presents itself. We argue that the psychoanalyst cannot do otherwise but to abstain himself from being put in this position. Furthermore, the need for this abstention is inherent to the psychoanalytic practice, where it is rooted in the active refusal, when receiving a patient, to use any kind of nosographic classification, in other words to catalogize.
