Gunpowder artillery has seen in the last quarter of the XVth Century a quick pace of change, with the appearance and generalization of large iron- or lead- balls culverins, iron-ball cannons or hackbuts. Those technical developments have deeply transformed the art of siege, be it on the side of the besiegers, with new methods for the elimination of active defence organs and for opening a breachl, or on the side of the besieged, who can use the new ordnance for counter-battery fire, dirupting the approaches or close defense. All this implies reconsidering what is meant by the adaptation of fortification to artillery.
